Gem Club “Twins”

…Gem Club (@iamgemclub)?  My God, this is breathtaking.  Every once in a (great) while, Style Etoile hears a song and tears automatically (and without warning) spring to our eyes.  This happened the first time we heard Bon Iver’s The Wolves (Act 1&2) and Cinematic Orchestra’s To Build A Home.  It also happened the first time we heard the above track by the hauntingly beautiful Gem Club.  The tears aren’t necessarily a result of sadness, but more a result of deep emotional stirring.  Point being, this is good stuff.  Way better than good, actually.  Gem Club’s full length debut, Breakers, is a whispering journey that is pure magic from start to finish.  Do yourself a favor and check it out…

Summer Camp “Better Off Without You”

…Summer Camp (@summercampband)?  Summer Camp’s Welcome to Condale was one of 2011’s funnest albums, and we are happy to let you know that these guys sound even better live than they do on our headphones—we caught them at Mercury Lounge a few weeks ago and had a perma-grin for at least a week following the show.  The indie-pop group makes nostalgic yet current pop music that reminds us of a female lovechild of The Drums and The Postelles.  Happy days are here again…

Nicolas Jaar “With Just One Glance”

…Nicolas Jaar (@clownandsunset)?  OK, so we realize that some of you out there may have heard of Nicolas Jaar, but Style Etoile is willing to redundancy on this one.  Because Nicolas Jaar is awesome.  The multi-talented Chilean-American makes minimal, beautiful, sexy, layered, ever-evolving electronic music—think Burial meets M83.  Style Etoile was lucky enough to catch Jaar at Music Hall of Williamsburg last week, and it was such a transcendental experience, we are not going to dishonor his live act by trying to describe it with words.

Airlines “Burial Grounds”

…Airlines (@airlinesmusic)?  Style Etoile likes music that makes us feel hopeful.  Uplifted.  Like anything’s possible.  Airlines makes that kind of music and in the dog days of winter, we can’t thank them enough.  The LA-based band’s tropical electronica—think Friendly Fires meets Tanlines meets Yeasayer—gets us moving, makes us smile, and transports us to a happy, dance-y place.  Enjoy.

why aren’t you listening to…

Princeton “Clamoring For Your Heart”

…Princeton (@princetonmusic)?  Style Etoile doesn’t like our jealous side, but every now and then it rears its ugly head.  The source of our jealousy right now?  All of you lucky Angelenos.   Not only are you enjoying weather that is easily 30 degrees warmer than New York, but you are also home to Princeton’s January residency at the Bootleg Theater.  Princeton is fronted by twin brothers Jesse and Matt Kivel and man, do we love them.  They are making music that is one part Cure, one part Morrissey, with a little Gorillaz thrown in for good measure.  This is smooth, synth-y, beautiful stuff and we can’t wait till they show the cold coast some love (hint hint)…

Adventure Galley “Addict”

…Adventure Galley?  Let’s start the week off with a bang.  Today Style Etoile brings you Adventure Galley—a Portland sextet who are having some serious post-punk fun.  These guys remind us of The Killers meets ANR and they have that sad-dance-y quality that we love so much.  This is infectious, get-the-party-started stuff, and we can’t wait to hear what they come up with next—if the few songs that have just been previewed are any indication, 2012 is going to be a real jam for these guys (and for those of us who listen to them)…

why aren’t you listening to…

Memoryhouse “Quiet America”

…Memoryhouse (@inmemoryhouse)?  Despite the fact that the temperatures are below anything resembling acceptable right now, Style Etoile is managing to stay warm with the help of Memoryhouse.  The Canadian duo who released a real winner on Subpop last year is about to drop their next album, The Slideshow Effect, at the end of February and we can’t wait.  Because when Memoryhouse is doing what they do best—intimate, sparse, effortless, atmospheric, lovely music—there is little else to which we would rather listen.

why aren’t you listening to…

Perfume Genius “Learning”

…Perfume Genius (@perfumegenius)?  Style Etoile thought it was only fitting that we should start off a bang with one of our favorite musicians these days—Perfume Genius.  Perfume Genius is Mike Hadrass and he makes beautiful, haunting music to support his emotional, unflinching, inner-depths-of-your-soul, often dark lyrics.  The Seattle songwriter is set to debut his second album, Put Your Back N 2 It in February and we seriously can’t wait—his debut Learning easily made our best of 2010 and he never fails to take our breath away…

why aren’t you listening to…

…Our Top 25?  You didn’t think we’d let 2011 end without a “Best Of” post, did you?  Of course not.  With all of the amazing music that came out this year, making this list seemed a bit daunting to us, but we weren’t about to let that stop us from showing you a little love.  So without further ado (and in no real particular order), we present our top 25 songs that we posted this year…

Frank Turner “I Am Disappeared”

…Frank Turner (@fthc)?  Style Etoile thought we should end the year with a bang, so for our final music post of 2011, Frank Turner seemed pretty perfect.  Those who know us know we have a think for Brit rock, so throw in a cup of folk and a dash of punk and we are bound to devour the whole thing.  Turner is a poet and his dark, yet beautiful lyrics act in perfect harmony with the urgent, jangly guitar rock with which it is often paired (think Frightened Rabbit meets Green Day).  His 2011 release England Keep My Bones always sounds right, and we can’t wait to catch him when he brings his act to this coast…
